Virtualization technology is the method of operating a virtual instance of a computer device in a layer separated from the actual hardware. Most usually, it refers to operating more than operating systems on a computer system simultaneously. To the applications running on top of the virtualized machine, it can perform as if they are on their own dedicated computer, where the operating system, libraries, and other applications are unique to the guest virtualized system and unconnected to the host OS which lies below it.

Type 2 hypervisor is an interface of software that emulates the machine with which a system regularly interacts. Type 2 hypervisor instances are KVM, VMWare Fusion, Microsoft Hyper V, Windows Virtual PC, Virtual Server 2005 R2, and VMWare Workstation 6.0.

History of Virtualization Technology 

Virtualization Technology is not a modern concept. One of the old works in the area was a paper by Christopher Strachey called Time Sharing in Large Fast Computers. IBM (International Business Machines) started exploring virtualization with its M44/44X and CP-40 research systems. These in shift point to the commercial CP-67/CMS.
